Tech Tip: Installing door latch reinforcements for Dodge Ram trucks

These reinforcements are designed to install over the existing door panel of certain Dodge and Ram pickups that may be prone to fatigue and failure around the latch area.

In this Tech Tip, Dorman Products describes the installation process for the OE FIX Door Latch Reinforcements, Nos. 926-264 and 926-286. These reinforcements are designed to install over the existing door panel of certain Dodge and Ram pickups that may be prone to fatigue and failure around the latch area. After installation of the reinforcements, the structure ensures proper door latch function.

Before you begin

  • Always wear proper safety equipment when performing repairs.
  • Ensure this part fits the exact vehicle year, make, model, and configuration. Verify this at point of purchase using the part number on the box.
  • Reference the appropriate service manual for the vehicle. If you do not have a service manual, and do not have the training or experience to perform the necessary procedures correctly, seek the services of a qualified technician.

Instructions

  1. Remove top door latch mounting screw only.
  2. Attach reinforcement plate by top mounting hole only, using one provided new screw to prevent the door latch from falling down in the door. Do not tighten down screw at this time.
  3. Remove two original bottom latch screws and swing plate in position, aligning bottom mounting screw holes.
  4. Install and tighten provided new bottom mounting screws and tighten top screw.
  5. After tightening down all mounting screws, open and close door to ensure proper latch operation.
  6. Optional: After reinforcement plate is tightened and proper operation is verified, drill holes for auxiliary rivets. Use drill bit matching diameter of locating holes and drill holes through door shell.
