Tech Tip: Disposal of contaminated refrigerant

July 2, 2019
To perform a recover, recycle, and recharge service for an automotive A/C system, first ensure that the refrigerant meets the purity standards.

In order for a technician to be able to perform a recover, recycle, and recharge service for your automotive A/C system the first step is to ensure that the refrigerant meets the purity standards. When the refrigerant is contaminated, the technician cannot proceed with the service. The vehicle still needs to be repaired, so it may be helpful to seek out an RRR (recover, recycle, recharge) machine that can help deal with contaminated refrigerant efficiently. For example, CPS Products’ TRSA21 portable refrigerant recovery (scavenger) unit is able to collect the contaminated refrigerant so that it can be disposed of properly without having it vented into the atmosphere, which is illegal.

The TRSA21 meets SAE J2810 and J2851 standards and utilizes CPS’s patented 2-cylinder oil-less compressor. This unit is also equipped with a suction side oil separator to collect oil removed from the mobile A/C system. The TRSA21 comes with an 8' manifold gauge set, No. MAID8QDL, which includes manual couplers and a tin case. When using this unit, technicians should insist on proper repair procedures when it comes to recovery and recycling so that contaminated refrigerant can be properly disposed of.
