Tool Review: Ingersoll Rand IQV20 W5132 Impactool

May 12, 2017
The 360-degree task light on this impact wrench allowed the reviewer to work efficiently in low light.

The Ingersoll Rand IQV20 W5132 Impactool is a powerful cordless 3/8” impact wrench capable of delivering up to 50 percent more torque than other options, says the company. The tool has 550 ft/lbs of nut-busting torque and 365 ft/lbs of max reverse torque. The W5132 is available with a 3/8” or 1/2” drive, and a power regulator with four power and control settings for accurate tightening. Additionally, the tool comes equipped with a shadowless 60 lm Chip-on-Board (COB) LED task light that provides a 360-degree ring of light to the area that needs servicing.

The Review

When working in a garage or in tight spaces, having good visibility can be the key to saving time and frustration on the job. For reviewer Phil Fournier of Phil’s Auto Clinic in Hemet, California, the Ingersoll Rand 3/8” impact wrench (IQV20 W5132 Impactool) did just that with its notable 360-degree task light feature.

Fournier has poor eyesight and trifocal glasses, therefore he requires a lot of light to work efficiently, and the task light provided four different levels of light right on the work area, guiding the tool to the bolt or nut. He said the dual functionality meant he didn’t have to set up a cumbersome work lamp, or use his belt-mounted flashlight like he normally does. He said the feature is something he hasn’t seen before on other brands and tools.

Beyond his favorite light feature, Fournier noted that the power and torque the cordless tool produces is “highly impressive” and “certainly adequate for most jobs without resorting to a more powerful tool for bolt loosening.”

The portability of the tool was also a plus for Fournier, who hadn’t used an Ingersoll Rand battery-powered impact wrench before this one.

Removal and replacement of Toyota Prius or Honda Insight hybrid battery packs, where there are multiple small fasteners in both applications, makes dragging an air hose behind inconvenient, Fournier says. So the 3/8” impact worked great for him in that kind of application.

All in all, Fournier says the tool is simple to use and the only preparation that needs to be made is reading the directions on how to shift the level of lighting.

The included manual highlights mostly safety warnings and a visual guide to the tool, as well as some written instructions on how to operate the tool.

Fournier said he ideally would like to have two batteries with the impact so he could swap them out on the charger and reduce downtime during work time. His tool only came with one.*

The only questions he’s left with are about the longevity of the tool, which he says he can’t judge at the present time.

“I would hope the tool has a good warranty as it is pretty expensive and a comparable air powered tool is much less with a known long life,” Fournier says. “However, I would have bought the tool many years ago if they had been available back then, even at the higher price.”

*Manufacturer's note: The W5132 can be purchased as part of a kit with one or two batteries.
