Until April 30, technicians have a chance to provide the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) with valuable feedback on gasoline engine repairs, with five randomly selected respondents receiving a $500 Snap-On gift card.
Participants don't need to be ASE Certified to take the survey, and the non-profit says they've already received over 8,000 responses.
“The response to this survey has been tremendous and we want to thank everyone that has participated so far,” said Matt Shepanek, vice president, credential testing programs for ASE. “The preliminary results will be shared with the industry, used to update training, and will be included in the review of the ASE engine repair tasks and test questions.”
ASE was commissioned to conduct a series of studies to identify and understand which repair tasks automotive service technicians perform most frequently. The initial survey is focused on gasoline engine repair tasks.
Survey results obtained through April 9 showed that 72% of those that completed the survey are currently A1 certified or were in the past, and 76% hold one or more ASE A2-A8 automotive certifications. A majority of those respondents hold each of those respective certifications.
Regarding training, technicians receive training from a variety of sources including on the job (79%), OEM training (69%), college (57%), high school (53%), and aftermarket (47%). Among those who completed the survey, 82% said they have 10 or more years of experience and 57% said ASE certifications factored into their pay plans.

ASE also reaffirms their commitment to protecting privacy, clarifying that responses will only be reported as a collective group and will not be shared with any third party. The survey is anonymous and an email address is all that is required to be entered in the drawing for the Snap-on gift cards.
