A mechanical breakdown policy, a protection plan and a vehicle service contract are all synonyms to describe the same product. However, most commonly, these are referred to as extended car warranties. Don’t be misguided - these contracts or breakdown policies are not warranties – only vehicle manufacturers can provide warranties.
