Want to help your technicians stay safer at work?

Here is a five-step process

For more than 30 years, DuPont’s STOP (Safety Training Observation Program) has helped organizations prevent injuries by increasing safety awareness.

Thousands of companies and government organizations worldwide have realized not only the human benefits of this program, but also the impact in real dollars and cents.

The basic tool in the DuPont STOP training is the STOP Safety Cycle. It has five steps to help increase safety awareness by eliminating unsafe acts and unsafe conditions as workers do their jobs.

The steps in the STOP Safety Cycle are:

1. Decide - Before a person begins any activity, they need to decide to make safety their first priority. When a person decides to put safety first, they commit to safety awareness, say DuPont safety experts.

2. Stop - Before starting an activity, workers need to come to a complete stop and give their full attention to the entire area, what is going on there and what they will be doing there.

3. Observe - Observe for unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.

4. Think - As a worker thinks about what they’ve observed, they need to consider how their safety, or the safety of others, will be affected by using a questioning attitude to ask:

• What unexpected things might happen during the job?

• What injuries could occur if the unexpected happens?

• How can this job be done more safely?

The idea, the safety experts say, is to think through the job and determine how it can be done more safely.

5. Act - Act by applying good judgment to take whatever action is needed to eliminate unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.

Dupont training experts point out that all the steps in the STOP Safety Cycle work together to help a worker approach any activity in a safe way.
