What is the number one activity while driving?

Sept. 1, 2014
It is not what you might think.

What do you think is the number one activity that people do while driving?

If, like me, you answered talk on a cell phone or text, you would be wrong. At least  according to a consumer survey done by DMEautomotive, a science-based, results-driven automotive marketing company .

Singing out loud is the number one activity while driving, the survey found.

The other top five activities performed while driving were:

- Have a phone conversation.

- Eat.

- Read a text message.

- Send a text message.

The survey also revealed that women are more avid “car-aokers than men, and they are also more likely to eat or have a phone conversation while driving.

Averts attention

DMEautomotive says that nhtsa.gov/risky-driving, the official U.S. government website for distracted driving, defines distracted driving as any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving.

Furthermore, the company notes in the Harvard Mental Health Letter, Dr. Michael Miller, editor in chief, says that although people like to think they can multitask, cognitive research suggests that the brain tends to focus on one major activity at a time.

The bottom line: when behind the wheel, focus on driving.
