NHTSA issued safety notices for truck, pickup brands

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently issued recall notices for several commercial vehicles regarding safety issues with steering gear, unlatched tailgates, and electronic stability control errors. The brands affected include Autocar, General Motors, Daimler Truck, and more. 

Owners of the affected vehicles should be contacted via U.S. mail over the next two months, but fleet and independent owners of these vehicles can contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. More information on each recall can be found below.

Some Autocar models may have improperly assembled steering gear

Autocar is recalling certain 2023 ACX and ACTT vehicles. The steering gear assemblies may have been assembled incorrectly with fewer recirculating balls than are required, which may result in a loss of steering control. A loss of steering control increases the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 36 vehicles. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering gears as necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 4. Owners may contact Autocar customer service at 888-218-3611. Autocar's numbers for this recall are ACX-2401 and ACTT-2401.

Tailgate may open on certain Chevrolet & GMC models

General Motors is recalling certain 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. The tailgate's electronic gate-release switch may short-circuit due to water intrusion, which can result in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in park. An unlatched tailgate may open while driving and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 323,232 vehicles. Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 18. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N232426400.

Certain DTNA vehicles may have an electronic stability control error

Daimler Truck North America is recalling certain 2024-2025 Western Star 49X and 2025 Freightliner Cascadia vehicles. The Electronic Stability Control software has incorrect axle spacing parameters. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 136, "Electronic Stability Control Systems on Heavy Vehicles." Incorrect parameters can decrease vehicle stability or braking performance, increasing the risk of crash.

This recall potentially affects seven vehicles. Dealers will update the ESC software. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 31. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is FL993.

Some MFTA models may experience engine failure

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America is recalling certain 2024 FEC7K and FEC9K vehicles. Due to a control unit counter error, the vehicle may shut down unexpectedly, which can result in a loss of drive power. A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 175 vehicles. The remedy is currently under development. None of the affected vehicles have been sold, so therefore no owner notification letters will be sent. Owners may contact MFTA customer service at 877-771-0707. MFTA's number for this recall is C10126.

The axle spindles on some Paccar models may fracture

Paccar is recalling certain 2024 Peterbilt 389, 520, 567, and Kenworth T880 trucks. The bearing journals may not be fully seated in the steering knuckle assemblies, preventing the proper installation of the wheel-end hub assemblies. An improperly installed wheel-end hub assembly can leak oil, causing the axle spindles to loosen or fracture and increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 48 vehicles. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering knuckle assemblies as necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 25. Owners may contact Peterbilt customer service at 940-591-4220 and/or Kenworth customer service at 425-828-5888. Paccar’s numbers for this recall are 24PBB and 24KWB.

Paccar is recalling certain 2024-2025 Kenworth T280, T380, T480, T680, T880, L770, W990, and 2024-2025 Peterbilt 389, 520, 535, 536, 537, 548, 567, 579, 589 trucks. The steering gear assemblies may have been assembled incorrectly with fewer recirculating balls than are required, which may result in a loss of steering control. A loss of steering control increases the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 47,208 vehicles. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering gears as necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 25. Owners may contact Peterbilt customer service at 940-591-4220 and/or Kenworth customer service at 425-828-5888. Paccar's numbers for this recall are 24PBC and 24KWC.
