Electrification and vehicle batteries

Feb. 5, 2019
Increased electrification in the commercial truck industry has put a greater demand on batteries.

Electric vehicles make up such a small percentage of the marketplace that they haven’t had much of an impact on the batteries used in the overall industry. However, increased electrification in the commercial truck industry has put a greater demand on batteries in general. In some ways, lower weight, higher capacity batteries have taken a backseat to a more pressing industry concern – high temperature conditions with more cycle service durability.

Why is high heat a critical issue?

  • Battery boxes are being positioned closer to the engine
  • There is reduced venting in battery boxes
  • Aerodynamic skirting can reduce airflow to the battery box
  • High heat generating, exhaust gas recirculation systems are close to the battery box

What does this have to do with fleet service and preventive maintenance? It’s important to put the right battery in the right application, so that preventive maintenance doesn’t get replaced by emergency maintenance.

For example, East Penn had developed an AGM battery technology designed to handle high heat and cycle service needs, and recommends that fleets employ a battery technology such as this for all Class 6, 7 or 8 trucks 2011 and newer that require high cycle service capabilities of an AGM design. Using a battery suitable for these applications can reduce self-discharge and improve overall battery life.
