Toyota taps Hexagon Purus for HD fuel cell electric powertrain kits

The company will be supply hydrogen storage systems and high-voltage battery packs for Toyota's fuel cell electric powertrain kit for commercial vehicles.

Hexagon Purus will be supplying components to Toyota North America for the company’s heavy-duty fuel cell electric powertrain kits, the company announced at the 2024 Advanced Clean Transportation Expo.

“We are entering a new era in our collaboration with Toyota supplying components for its fuel cell powertrain kits, to help pave the way for zero emission commercial transportation,” said Todd Sloan, EVP of Battery Systems and Vehicle Integration in Hexagon Purus. “Hydrogen can play a significant role in the reduction of emissions from heavy-duty transportation.”

Hexagon Purus will be providing full hydrogen storage system and high-voltage battery pack for the heavy-duty fuel cell electric powertrain kit. These kits will be produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, which assembles integrated dual fuel-cell modules for hydrogen-powered commercial trucks. These fuel cell kits will then be sold to heavy-duty truck OEMs for fuel-cell electric Class 8 trucks.
