Bridgestone demos 70% recycled tire, Drive-Over System

The new tire, which is debuting and demoing at WasteExpo, is certified to support the transition to a circular economy and bioeconomy, while the Drive-Over System can help fleets monitor for irregular tire wear.
Bridgestone Americas is debuting two new pieces of technology at WasteExpo, including its 70% recycled and renewable commercial tire and its Drive-Over System to track tire tread depth and wear. According to the company, the new tire earned ISCC PLUS certification, which validates the sustainability characteristics of alternative materials throughout the supply chain.
“The debut of this 70% recycled and renewable demonstration tire is not a glimpse into the future, but the reality of today,” said Steve Hoeft, president, Commercial Truck Group, Bridgestone Americas. “With this tire, and the work done with our supply chain, we’ve created new opportunities with a proven product by meeting the rigorous standards set by the ISCC. This tire directly demonstrates how Bridgestone can help fleets achieve their sustainability goals now with expertly manufactured premium tires.”
The new tire is based on the Bridgestone M870, which is a high-scrub, all-position radial waste and recycling tire. The demo tire is made of circular synthetic rubber such as butadiene, halo butyl rubber, circular carbon black, and natural rubber. Using the Mass Balance approach, Bridgestone can trace the flow of alternative materials throughout the tire production process, monitoring how the demo tire’s alternative materials are mixed with conventional ones and documenting the exact quantity of each. This data can show how the tire industry could more effectively use recycled and renewable materials collected by fleets, Bridgestone stated.
Having used this approach, Bridgestone reported that a limited run of these tires will be used on waste fleets later this month.

Additionally, Bridgestone’s Drive-Over System uses specially designed plates to capture tread depth measurements for tires. This system can help alert fleets when there are irregular wear issues, Bridgestone said.
