Ford is recalling 2,345 of its best-selling Super Duty pickup trucks because they may be missing a spring in the brake assembly that connects the pedal to the booster pushrod, according to the NHTSA report safety recall report (25V401). Without the spring, the pedal can detach from the braking system and swing freely, rendering the system inoperable and increasing the likelihood of a crash. Because of the severity of the defect, Ford has issued a Do Not Drive warning.
Affected units include F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 models made between March 19 and May 4 of this year at the Kentucky Assembly Plant. The investigation found an operator “new to the role and in training” failed to include the spring during the assembly process. The recall is for any vehicle confirmed to be missing the spring via a review of the production line vision system, or for any vehicle where the video was missing or could not confirm the spring’s presence.
Ford dealers will check any trucks listed on the recall and, when necessary, make repairs by inserting the spring.
The issue was first found by a dealership technician during a pre-delivery inspection on May 5. Two other field reports reported the issue, as well as one warranty claim. As of June 3, Ford said no accidents were caused by the defect.
Contact your local dealer, call Ford at 1-866-436-7332, or visit NHTSA’s recall site and enter your VIN or license plate number to see if your vehicle was affected. Affected owners should contact their Lincoln or Ford dealer to schedule the repair and arrange a tow.
