The 500 facilities marks a significant benchmark for the SMART Initiative, with the next goal to establish 1,000 operational facilities by the end of 2030.
“Across our industry value-chain, members should be proud of the positive impact our collective leadership, education, advocacy, development and sustainability is having on society, in our economy and for our environment,” said Johannes Escudero, founder & CEO of the RNG COALITION. “Together, we have accomplished something that few believed was possible. We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re going to celebrate and tell the incredible story that is the RNG industry.”
The RNG COALITION established the SMART initiative in 2019 to help capture methane from waste sites across North America, setting a deadline of 2050 to handle methane and CO2 from over 43,000 waste sites. To do so, the SMART iniative set a goal of establishing 500 RNG facilities by 2025, 1,000 by 2030, and 5,000 by 2040.
Currently, there are 153 additional RNG facilities under construction and another 293 in the planning and permitting phases, according to the RNG COALITION.
