Tritium, Stäubli install port EV charging depot in California
Charging provider Tritium has installed and operationalized 33 chargers at SSA Terminals, a container terminal at Pier C in the Port of Long Beach, Calif. The 175kW chargers, which are equipped with Stäubli Quick Charging Connector (QCC) systems, will serve the pier’s electric-drive terminal tractors.
“Tritium’s partnership with SSA Terminals and the Port of Long Beach is a project we are immensely proud of,” Tritium CEO Jane Hunter said. “Autonomous charging is the future for EV depots and we’re excited to be leading the fast charger manufacturers in operationalizing hands-free charging for the Port of Long Beach.”

Funded by a $50 million Port of Long Beach grant from the California Air Resources Board’s Zero and Near Zero Emissions Freight Facility program, the QCC system “automatically connects Tritium’s chargers to charge ports on each terminal tractor,” Tritium stated in a press release, for a zero-touch charging experience.
The chargers were initially installed at the end of 2019 and EV tractor deliveries began in October 2020. Upon completion, the companies stated that the project is the first large-scale port EV charging program with mechanized charging connectors in North America, with more of its kind on the way. Stäubli stated that it is working with SSA Terminals to install five more QCC units at the Port of Oakland.
