Toyota Motor has announced plans to invest $3.6 billion to expand its San Antonio, Texas, manufacturing campus and shift production of the Tacoma midsize pickup from its Tijuana, Mexico, plant over the next four years.

The investment will add a second vehicle assembly line, nearly double the size of the existing 2.7 million-sq.-ft. facility by 2030, and create about 2,000 U.S. jobs. Once complete, the plant's annual production capacity is expected to increase from approximately 200,000 to 350,000 vehicles.

Toyota said the expansion is part of its broader plan to invest up to $10 billion more than previously announced in U.S. operations through 2030.

The automaker emphasized it will maintain manufacturing operations in Mexico, including continued Tacoma production at its Guanajuato facility, as production is gradually transferred from Tijuana.

The San Antonio plant currently builds the Toyota Tundra, including its hybrid variant, and the Toyota Sequoia hybrid SUV. Toyota also previously announced a $531 million investment in a rear-axle manufacturing facility on the campus, which is expected to begin production later this year.

“Toyota’s continued investment in North America is a testament to our confidence in the region’s workforce, innovation, and long-term growth potential,” said Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America. “By expanding our San Antonio plant, we are deepening our commitment to American manufacturing, creating meaningful and sustainable jobs, while advancing our mission to deliver high-quality vehicles that meet the changing needs of customers today and into the future.”

Toyota said it has invested $8.3 billion in the San Antonio facility since construction began in 2003 and currently employs about 48,000 people across the U.S.
