Smith Trucking to equip entire fleet with E-SMART

Sept. 12, 2024
The fleet will be using E-SMART’s speed limiter technology, with full fleet installation expected to finish in fall 2024.

Smith Trucking is installing E-SMART’s Dynamic Speed Management system across its entire fleet, with the goal of lowering potential claims, fuel costs, and other costs, the companies stated.

“With insurance costs for motor carriers rising, Smith Trucking’s decision to invest in preventing accidents by utilizing our advanced speed limiter technology is an effective and forward-thinking approach,” said Joe Thell, senior vice president at E-SMART. “We are pleased they have decided to use our system to reduce their risk, lower costs, and improve safety.”

The system will limit Smith Trucking’s vehicle speeds on both Interstates and local roads with lower speed limits, with the company aiming to complete their installation this fall.

“E-SMART’s Dynamic Speed Management technology is a more effective investment than the umbrella insurance coverage we’ve been buying because it gives us better control for the money,” said Mike Smith, VP/GM of Smith Trucking. “Speeding was a factor in our higher CSA scores, so we knew that managing speed would help greatly reduce that issue and better protect ourselves from liability and potentially very costly litigation.”

Additionally, Smith Trucking stated the speed limiters would improve their fuel mileage and lower tire and equipment costs by decreasing wear and tear.

The E-SMART system uses positioning technology to determine a truck’s location and understand its maximum safe speed as set by the company via E-SMART’s portal. The platform then works with the truck’s ECU to control the throttle. Companies can also choose to set verbal notifications for each speed zone.
