Major recalls at Ram, Ford both target backup cameras
Both Ford Motor Company and Stellantis are recalling certain commercial vehicles because of unreliable backup cameras. In certain cases for both OEMs, the image from the rear view camera freezes or does not display at all, according to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports.
At Ford, the problem has impacted about 1,075,299 vehicles, NHTSA reported, including the F-Series (F-150 through F-600) and Transit vans (MY2021-2023). The issue stems from an issue with the Ford Sync infotainment system. The rearview image does not display on affected vehicles. If drivers fail to heed the blank screen warning and continue reversing with limited visibility, a collision may occur.
To fix the issue, the trucks’ accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software needs to be updated. Ford anticipates this solution will be ready in Q3 2025, and will be available through a Ford dealer or an over-the-air update for free. Letters notifying owners of the safety risk will be mailed June 16, 2025, and a second letter will be sent once the fix is ready. The number for the recall is 25S49.
Stellantis, meanwhile, has recalled 235,000 MY2022-2025 Ram ProMaster vans due to a similar issue, according to the report. Customers are encouraged to visit their dealership to get the needed software update.
To remedy the problem, dealers will update the security gateway module software free of charge. Owners are expected to be notified via letters mailed on June 19, 2025. Chrysler's number for this recall is 40C.
