Court orders damage reduction to $108 million in Wabash case
In September 2024, trailer manufacturer Wabash received a verdict calling for $450 million in damages related to a 2019 accident. A circuit court has ordered the award be reduced to $108 million.
Wabash has updated its challenge to the verdict issued against the company in September 2024 by a St. Louis jury in Williams et al. v. Wabash.
On March 20, 2025, a Circuit Court determined that the punitive damage award of $450 million did not align with the company’s constitutional rights and ordered damages to be reduced to $108 million. The compensatory damages award will remain at $11.5 million.
The damages refer to a 2019 accident where a passenger vehicle struck the back of a 2004 Wabash trailer.Wabash stated that it believes that the damages remain “abnormally” high and that the verdict is not supported by the facts or the law. The company also said that the ruling will not prevent it from continuing to "provide its customers with products that contribute to safer roads."
