The University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH), in cooperation with the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) of American Trucking Associations and its Professional Technician Development Committee (PTDC), has created a scholarship for students pursuing a degree in the truck equipment and maintenance field.
The tuition-only only scholarship at UNOH in Lima, OH, is provided for students working toward a degree in auto diesel technology or a bachelor degree in specialized studies, with a minor in automotive aftermarket management. The scholarship applicant must be a TMC family member or sponsored by a TMC member.
UNOH started the first automotive and diesel program in Ohio in 1973. Since 1989, UNOH has graduated 2,969 students with diesel technology related degrees, including: 931 automotive/diesel; 1,342 diesel, 868 automotive/diesel associates; and 696 diesel associate degrees.
UNOH has approximately 3,600 students enrolled in its College of Technology and College of Business. Out of this total, 1,543 students are enrolled in the Auto/Diesel Technology program and 95 students are enrolled in the Specialized Studies program.
”This scholarship has been created to provide opportunity for future technicians and equipment managers within the trucking industry,” says Lee Long, PTDC chairman. “UNOH is a well respected school for diesel technicians entering the trucking industry.”
This is the second school to offer a scholarship in conjunction with TMC and the PTDC since the Committee’s founding three year’s ago. WyoTech has been a charter donor of technician scholarships, providing annual scholarships for their Blairsville, PA, and Laramie, WY, campuses. Both schools are active participants in PTDC and have provided the scholarships to promote interest in the truck maintenance field.
Morgan Lilly, Bridport, VT, is the third recipient of the TMC/WyoTech Diesel Truck Technician Scholarship. Lilly received a scholarship for 1,500 clock hours (nine months) attendance.
“Morgan exhibits the aptitude and dedication to become an outstanding truck technician,” says WyoTech president Guy Warpness. “His academic achievement and work performance exemplify the type of student for which this scholarship was created.”
Lilly graduated in June from Middleburg Union High School, Middleburg, VT, with a 3.7 grade point average and in the top 15 percent of his class. In addition to his high school studies, he participated in the Vermont Student Apprenticeship program in automotive technology at the Hannaford Career Center (HCC) Automotive Program, studying diesel electronics and earning his certificate of completion for Diesel Mechanic in June.
His co-op placement and sponsoring employer for this program last year is Green Mountain Kenworth, Shelburne, VT, where he worked 18-25 hours a week for the Kenworth dealership. Lilly worked around his school schedule as a technician for two local automotive and diesel engine repair shops starting when he was 14 and in addition he continues to run a small engine repair business from his home.
Lilly was a gold medalist in the diesel equipment competition at the 2006 Vermont SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference and a 2006 SkillsUSA Championship Finalist at the national level. He received Outstanding Student and High Honors awards from his high school in 2006 and was an FFA award winner in 2004. He is a member of the Vermont Technical Honors Society, Vermont Tractor Pullers Association, Bridport SnoBirds Snowmobile Club and Sons of the American Legion.
