Start-up begins autonomous commercial truck technology testing next year
After raising $55 million earlier this year from investors, a Chinese start-up company will begin testing autonomous commercial truck technology on a fleet of trucks in Arizona next year.
The 120-mile highway between Tuscon and Phoenix will be one of the test routes for the Level 4 system, along with one based in Shanghai, China. Testing in China started in September, according to KJZZ.
Level 4 systems take over all driving functions in certain conditions. By 2019, TuSimple plans to introduce commercial autonomous trucking service.
"You know all these technologies that they are using, many of them are already in our trucks…So, we are looking at it with great promise to reduce accidents and reduce collisions between vehicles and trucks,” Arizona Truckers Association CEO Tony Bradley told KJZZ.
In July, TuSimple completed a 170-mile public road test from San Diego, California to Yuma, Arizona using its Level 4 system.
