Mayhew Steel Products announced they are teaming up with Mike Smergilio from MSIII Racing and four-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Doug Coby as primary sponsor of the # 2 car for the 2017 NASCAR Whelen Modifed Tour. Doug Coby made the announcement during his champion’s speech at the Night of Champions Touring Award Banquet on Dec.10, 2016 in Charlotte, NC at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

“We are obviously really excited to bring Mayhew into our team as we try to chase four championships in a row,” Doug Coby said. “We feel like we have a great brand to pair up with their great brand. They are an industry leader in their field and they feel like we are an industry leader in our field, so it was a natural fit for the two of us to come together.”

This year, Coby became the first driver since the inception of the Whelen Modified Tour in 1985 to win three consecutive championship titles. He won his first championship in 2012 driving for team owner Wayne Darling. He was second in the standings to Ryan Preece in 2013 before winning the last three titles with the Mike Smeriglio owned MSIII Racing Team, led by Crew Chief Phil Moran.

“We’re really excited to win some races with Mayhew’s logo on our car and really get them more involved in the automotive side of their business,” Coby said. “They do industrial products and automotive products, and they’ve made it pretty clear that they would like to get some more traction among the automotive consumers, and the race fans and race team members. It’s a great fit for everybody involved, and we’re really excited to move.”

Mayhew Steel Products had served as an associate sponsor to the Bob Garbarino owned Mystic Missile NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour team for the 2016 season, and was looking to expand its racing sponsorship program. Mayhew President John Lawless was happy when the opportunity was presented to step up as primary sponsor with a championship team. “We're very excited to begin our relationship with MSIII Racing,” said Lawless. “This partnership will help us reach the NASCAR and racing fan base, whose demographics match those of our target customers.” Mayhew has a great line of specialty automotive tools that fit in well in the racing world, and looks forward to getting its brand out there in a big way.
