Kolman's Korner: They sure drive fast around these parts

With all the traveling I do as editor of Fleet Maintenance, I regularly have the need to rent a car.

On my latest rental, I had a funny thing happen to me.

At the end of August, I flew to Seattle for a fleet visit and to attend a Kenworth management editor meeting.

My flight arrived late and I hurried to the rental car counter, where I did the contract and then headed to the car rental parking garage to get my car.

I got a Nissan Versa Note Hatchback - a fun little compact.

Circle check

As is my custom, I completed a "circle check" of the car with the rental agent looking for damage. Then, I settled into the car and adjusted the seat and mirrors.

Next, I located the controls for the HVAC, lights and windshield wipers.

I buckled up and headed off to the interstate where I quickly got into the flow of traffic.

A shock

After I had been driving for a while, I looked down at the  speedometer and saw the needle sitting right at "110." The first thought that popped into my mind was: "My goodness, people is Seattle sure do drive fast."

Then I thought: "It sure doesn't seem like I'm traveling that fast."

After further observation, I realized the speedometer was in kilometers per hour.

Note to self: Always check the speedometer on rental cars before driving.
