Samsara launches Fuel Command Center for fleet fuel management

The new platform combines fuel spending data, routing recommendations, driver behavior, and fuel card controls to help fleets identify waste and limit fuel-related losses.

Key Highlights

  • Provides a centralized dashboard for monitoring fuel spending, driver behavior, and potential fraud incidents.
  • Integrates fuel card controls with vehicle location to prevent unauthorized transactions and reduce fraud.
  • Includes features like in-cab idling alerts and preferred fueling locations to optimize fuel efficiency and costs.
  • Analyzes fuel spending data to identify areas for savings, with a median reduction of 4% in fuel costs among users.
  • Addresses the impact of rising diesel prices on fuel fraud, which increases by approximately 9% for every 10-cent rise.

Samsara has launched the Fuel Command Center, a centralized fuel management solution designed to give fleet operations and finance teams a single view of fuel spending, driver behavior, routing, and fuel card controls.

The platform combines Samsara’s fuel management capabilities with its Commercial Navigation and Coast fuel card integration. Fleet managers can use the system to identify fuel waste, recommend preferred fueling locations, and monitor potential card misuse.

“Fuel is one of the biggest costs a fleet carries—30% to 40% of total marginal operating costs,” said Ryan Yu, VP of Product at Samsara. “Prices have swung hard the past several months, and when they rise, fuel fraud rises with them. Customers told us pump-price visibility isn't enough. They need fraud, driver behavior, and vendor choices in one view, so they can cut costs before they add up. That's why we built Fuel Command Center: to give operators and finance leaders a way to turn their operations data into action and find immediate savings.”

The launch comes as fuel prices continue to fluctuate. According to Samsara’s Fuel Spend Index, diesel prices moved more than 20 cents per gallon in a single week seven times since late February. Diesel reached $5.23 per gallon at the end of July, up 16% from the beginning of the month.

The Fuel Command Center provides a consolidated view of total and recoverable fuel spending, including costs associated with idling, fueling locations, driver efficiency, fraud, and suspicious fuel transactions. Managers can use the dashboard to identify areas for potential savings and take actions such as enabling in-cab idling alerts or establishing preferred fuel vendors.

“We used to worry about fraud all the time. Cards went missing, PINs were shared, and we had no way to verify transactions,” said Tim Weisser, Fleet Operations Manager at Milestone Home Services. "Now with Coast and Samsara, the system takes care of it. If the truck's not there, the card doesn't work. Simple.”

Commercial Navigation adds fuel planning to the routing process by incorporating preferred fuel stops into routes. Samsara said a 90-day analysis of more than 2,000 customers found organizations reduced fuel spending by a median of 4% by fueling at preferred vendors.

Through its Coast integration, the platform also connects fuel card authorization with vehicle location. Fleets can establish policies that block transactions when the assigned vehicle is not present.

The company said its analysis found detected fuel fraud incidents increase by about 9% for every 10-cent increase in diesel prices.
