Yokohama apprenticeship program develops maintenance talent
Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Mississippi (YTMM) is investing in technician development through a maintenance apprenticeship program designed to build skilled trades talent from within its workforce.
The program, launched in 2024 in partnership with East Mississippi Community College, combines classroom education with on-the-job training at Yokohama's West Point, Mississippi facility, where commercial truck tires are manufactured. Participants can work toward an associate degree while gaining practical maintenance experience and preparing for technical roles within the plant.
According to Philip Calhoun, YTMM general manager and vice president of operations, the initiative supports the company's long-term workforce development strategy by helping employees expand their technical skills and advance into maintenance careers.
Employees enrolled in the apprenticeship begin on the production floor before transitioning into more technical positions, including maintenance. The structured progression allows workers to develop troubleshooting, repair, and equipment-related skills while remaining employed full-time.
Yokohama covers tuition and book expenses for participating employees, reducing barriers to additional education and training.
The program also addresses the ongoing challenge many manufacturers face in recruiting skilled maintenance personnel. By developing talent internally, the company aims to create a pipeline of trained technicians familiar with its equipment and operations.
“It’s a win-win for Yokohama and our area,” said Dr. Michael Busby, vice president of career technical and workforce education at East Mississippi Community College. “They’re coming to school, still employed, and giving back to the industry.”
"The program has helped build confidence and develop skills that extend beyond the workplace," Calhoun said. "If you can't find the talent, then you have to develop your own people."
Several employees are expected to complete the program in the near future, according to the company.
