New Years is a time to ponder adjustments and make our determinations for the coming year.

Is it that time already?

Dec. 9, 2015
Time to think about changes you want to make in 2016.

Seems to me, as time goes by, life becomes more and more complicated and challenging. Not just personally, but professionally.

There’s considerably much more to do and not nearly enough time in which to do everything – regardless of how early one gets to work or how late one stays.

Everywhere you look, people are rushing around and are stressed out. A foul mood is the order of the day. No one has time to just sit and visit anymore.

When I can, I enjoy reading books of thoughts, quips and quotation as I find support in them. Recently, I came across this quote from Helen Keller: Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.

An Open Book

The end of one year and the beginning of another always has been a time for reflecting on all that has taken place during the year about to end and for looking forward to the coming year. It’s a time when we ponder adjustments and make our determinations for the New Year.

Poet Edith Lovejoy Pierce said this about New Years: We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.

What I’ve learned over time is that what each New Year brings depends a great deal upon what we bring to the New Year. Therefore, like many others, I make resolutions for each New Year.

Experience also has taught me, that in order to keep my resolutions, they must be important to me and be realistic and achievable.

My List

For 2016, my resolutions – in no particular order – include:

- Do not take things for granted.

- Be more positive, look on the bright side and do not get caught up in negativity, disappointment and failure which are, after all, a part of life.

- Be more open minded to the ideas and suggestions of others.

- Do not be so quick to judge or criticize others.

- Make more time to visit with friends and family.

- Volunteer more.

- Continue to improve my communication skills.

- Keep learning about, and taking advantage of, new technology.

- Be better at acknowledging and appreciating others.

- Genuinely smile and laugh more.

Only Good Things

Many years ago, my dear father told me: The end of a year is neither an end nor a beginning. Rather, it is a going on with the wisdom and intelligence that comes from experience.

May you do well in keeping your New Year resolutions.

All the very best wishes for a new year filled with only good things, especially health and much happiness and contentment.
