December order activity was as expected, with fleets ordering to secure a dwindling number of available build slots in the second half of 2019.
Stabilizing truckload rates and a short-lived run up in diesel prices were largely responsible for a continued deterioration in trucking conditions during October.
The drop off in order activity was expected, as OEM’s have nearly filled their order boards for 2019.
Increasing capacity and productivity in truck and intermodal should impact shippers positively through next year.
Additional OEMs started taking orders for the second half of 2019 and their customers responded by placing orders to reserve future build slots.
Class 8 factory shipments are now forecast to be 350,000 units and commercial trailer production to be 310,000 units in 2019.
Trailer orders for the past twelve months have exceeded 400,000 units.
September Class 8 order activity was the 10th best month ever, but with most of 2018 hitting all time highs, was only the 5th highest monthly volume this year, FTR reports.

In the second half of the year, there will be some stabilization due to added capacity in the segment.
Fleets have started ordering trailers a couple months early to reserve build spots and lock in prices.
