Navistar issues recall of 31,467 new International trucks and buses

Dec. 6, 2022
If left unchecked, improperly made fasteners in the suspension and steering gear joints may affect handling and result in a safety issue.

A defect in hex flange lock nuts found in the suspension and steering gear joints has caused Navistar to issue two separate recalls, affecting 31,467 trucks and buses manufactured from January-August 2022. These are listed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as recall numbers 22V-869 and 22V-870.

The problem will be fixed by changing out the defective lock nuts with conforming ones. According to Navistar, “The longest repair will take less than two hours,” thought the actual time will depend on the vehicle’s configuration.

The fasteners were improperly heat treated by a tier 3 supplier and not made to the OEM’s specifications. They did not immediately fail during vehicle assembly. Over time, tough, the defect could cause loss of tension, which would impact handling and possibly lead to a crash.

No crashes or warranty claims have yet been reported by Navistar. A warning sign that the hex flange lock nut were causing an issue would be “a general ‘loose’ feeling when driving,” according to the NHTSA recall.

Customer and dealer letters will be mailed by Jan. 20, 2023.
