SuperRigs results: Scrapin By doubles down with second straight Best of Show
BRISTOL, Tennessee—Set against a pristine Appalachian mountain backdrop with clear skies and sweltering summer heat, dozens of truckers gathered at Bristol Motor Speedway for the 44th Annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs truck beauty contest.
Temperatures climbed into the upper 80s during the June 25-27 event, with drivers sweating through the afternoons as they prepared their rigs for judging. And when the awards were handed out, one familiar truck once again rose, er, scraped, to the top.
Kenny Ziglar II of Rawlins, Wyoming, claimed Best of Show honors for the second consecutive year with his 2007 Peterbilt 379, "Scrapin By," earning the $10,000 grand prize from Shell Rotella. The viper red rig also secured second place in the Best Lights category.
"We went in there giving our all, trying to pull off a second win if we could," Ziglar told Fleet Maintenance. "If we didn't, I still felt like we would place pretty well just because we learned throughout last year where to clean, what to do, and how to catch people's eye."
The changes since last year included painting the bottom of the fifth wheel and other "minor details that most people probably wouldn't even notice," according to Ziglar.
The truck's second straight title is all the more impressive considering it remains a working truck. Since January, Ziglar said the Peterbilt has logged about 83,000 miles, taking only three weeks off for repairs and maintenance, and of course one final cleaning before heading to Bristol.
"It's not just a win for me, it's a win for everybody on my team," Ziglar added, crediting detailer William Wright of Shine One Truck Wash and the others who helped keep the truck looking its best. "I couldn't do it without them."
And despite the back-to-back championships, Ziglar made it clear that the truck isn't headed for retirement.
"Nothing against the people that take the truck home and put it in a barn, it's just not me," Ziglar said. "I want to get out here working. I want to show people that work trucks can be kept up and kept nice."
Other winners included David Calabrese, who earned Best of Show first runner-up and a $4,000 prize with his 2022 Peterbilt. His truck also won the Best Engine and Best Interior awards. Jeffrey Dills took second runner-up and $2,000 with his 2007 Peterbilt.
Justin Speece won the People's Choice Award with his 2003 Peterbilt. For every online vote cast in the category, Shell Rotella donated $10 to the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund.
