UPS adding propane vehicles to its delivery fleet

April 14, 2014

UPS (www.ups.com) is purchasing 1,000 propane package delivery trucks and will install an initial 50 fueling stations at UPS locations in the U.S. – an investment of approximately $70 million.

The propane fleet will replace gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles used largely in rural areas in Louisiana and Oklahoma, with other states pending. The vehicles on these routes can travel up to 200 miles on a tank of propane.

The trucks are based on Freightliner Custom Chassis’ LPG version of its MT-45 chassis. The LPG version features a GM 6.0L V8 engine offering 308 hp and 367 ft/lbs at 4,400 rpm; liquid propane injection system with 48-gal, 16” by 75”, right-hand-mounted propane tank; and GVWR of up to 19,500 lbs. It comes standard with 50-degree wheel cut and 19.5” tires

UPS has one of the largest private alternative fuel fleets in the nation with more than 3,150 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles. This includes all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, CNG, LNG, propane, biomethane and light-weight fuel-saving composite body vehicles.
