Cummins unveils new B7.2 and X10 diesel engines
Cummins' newest addition to the 40-year-old B-series engine platform, the B7.2, was unveiled at NTEA Work Truck Week on March 5, and promises to deliver a future-ready global platform that doesn't fall short on performance or durability.
The engine OEM also displayed the X10, a mid-bore heavy-duty engine that replaces both the L9 and X12 engine platforms.
B7.2 diesel engine
Cummins B7.2 diesel engine is the next engine in the company's HELM platform following the B6.7 Octane engine, and is built to serve a variety of medium-duty and vocational applications, including bus, pickup and delivery, utility trucks, towing, and more.
Here are the key specs of the B7.2:
- Power: 240-340 hp
- Peak torque: 650-1,000 lb.-ft.
- Displacement: 7.2L
- Truck class: medium-duty
- Vehicle applications: pickup and delivery, utility, refuse, towing, bus
- Production: 2027
The new engine will also offer a compression release engine brake and extended oil drain interval pan option, and will be automatic engine shutdown and stop-start capable for improved greenhouse gas emissions.
The B7.2 will go into full production in North America starting in 2027 at Rocky Mount Engine Plant in North Carolina.

Equipped with the full suite of Cummins' digital technologies, the B7.2 will help fleets maximize uptime and performance through access to a host of applications. The engine is also compatible with is also Cummins Maintenance Monitor capable, reducing trips to the shop and minimizing total cost of operation.

X10 engine
Also recently introduced is Cummins' X10 engine as another addition to the HELM platform, meaning customers are able to select the fuel that best suits their needs.
According to the company, the engine's power-to-weight ratio is class-leading, allowing for enhanced productivity without weighing down vehicles.

Cummins plans to launch the X10 in 2027.
