The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has removed both Blue Star ELD and Reliable ELD devices from its registered electronic logging devices list. These devices were removed due to a failure to meet the minimum requirements for 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A. This removal is effective as of August 15, 2024.
Fleets who were using these devices are advised to discontinue doing so and revert to paper logs or another logging software. Afterwards, fleets will have 60 days to replace their revoked devices with compliant ones from the Registered Devices list, with a current deadline of October 14, 2024. If Blue Star ELD and Reliable ELD correct their devices to meet official standards, FMCSA will restore them to the list and notify the industry.
During this grace period, inspectors are advised not to cite drivers with the revoked ELDs for “no record of duty status” or “Failing to use a registered ELD." Instead, they will request paper logs, other logging software, or to see the ELD display for hours-of-service review. As of October 14, drivers still using the revoked ELDs will be placed out-of-service.
