Freightliner Trucks now offering Backup Alert System

May 16, 2024
The new system includes a proximity sensor, backup camera, and in-cab display for convenience and safety.

Freightliner Trucks, a division of Daimler Truck North America, is now offering the new Backup Alert System on Plus series vehicles. This safety system is available as a factory-installed option and includes a 7” integrated touchscreen display, backup camera, and reverse proximity sensor to enhance safety.

“The Backup Alert System is an ideal solution for added rear visibility for drivers who have to frequently navigate crowded urban environments, tight loading docks, or busy job sites,” said Aaron Scates, vice president of vocational and medium-duty market development at DTNA. “As a factory option, it’s backed by Freightliner, requires no downtime or degradation of the cab for third-party installation, and provides peace of mind for drivers and fleets alike.”

The package works for several applications, including pickup and delivery vehicles and construction and utility trucks. It also requires no additional driver training to use, as it mirrors the performance of systems already found in passenger cars.

Specifically, fleets may select whether their camera is mounted at the end of the frame or use a prepared camera with added harness length for flexible positioning. For either configuration, the camera’s feed goes to the touchscreen display, and the proximity sensor provides audible alerts when the vehicle is too close to either stationary or moving objects. Additional integrated steering wheel controls also provide hands-free calling, and the system offers a USB-C port and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Backup Alert System is available for the M2 106 Plus, M2 112 Plus, 108SD Plus, 114SD Plus, with deliveries expected in summer 2024.
