Lubrizol recently launched its CV1700 Series of heavy-duty engine oil additives ahead of the January 2027 first license date for the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) CL-4 and FB-4 performance categories.

The company said the additive solutions are designed to help lubricant marketers formulate oils meeting the new API requirements and heavy-duty OEM specifications while simplifying base oil sourcing and product portfolios.

“In navigating this important upgrade, heavy-duty diesel oil marketers must deliver elevated performance while navigating significant complexities within the marketplace,” said Padu Sreenivas, product management director of Lubrizol. “Base oil sourcing, OEM approvals, qualification timing, and more pose some risks for oil marketers as the API CL-4 and API FB-4 transition begins.” 

CV1700 Series shipments have begun in North America, giving customers time to finalize formulations before the new categories are licensed.

The additives are compatible with a range of base oils, including Group II, Group II/III, Group III, and polyalphaolefin (PAO). Lubrizol said the series also supports viscosity grades including 10W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40, 5W-40, 0W-40, 5W-20, and 5W-30.

The series supports both API CL-4 and FB-4 formulations, including backward-compatible oils and lower-viscosity options intended for newer engines.

Lubrizol said the CV1700 Series also offers competitive treat rates and broad viscosity coverage intended to help blenders consolidate product lines and simplify blending operations.

The API CL-4 and FB-4 categories are scheduled to take effect in January 2027.
