Castrol is launching ‘Castrol MoreCircular’, a program created with Safety-Kleen, to collect and refine used oil from customers, then integrate the refined oil into new lubricants. This service will be available to fleet maintenance shops and industrial sites, among other Castrol clients.
“Our ability to collect used oil from across the country and reprocess a waste product means that much of it can be used again and again,” said Andreas Osbar, CEO Castrol Americas. “We believe the time is right to lead the market with an integrated more circular – and as a result, lower-carbon-footprint - offer as our business customers are searching for levers to help de-carbonize their operations.”

The agreement pairs Castrol’s lubricant technology with Safety-Kleen’s geographic reach and collecting and refining work. As a result, 70% of reprocessed used oil can be recovered as base oil, according to Castrol. This leads to a 20-40% lower carbon footprint than the company’s traditional products, depending on the amount of RBBO used. The re-refined base oil then makes up at least 65% of the base oil in each MoreCircular lubricant. Reportedly, the Environmental Resources Management consultancy assessed these results and certified that they were carried out in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting & Reporting Standard.
Safety-Kleen, a subsidiary of Clean Harbors, completed market trials on MoreCircular with Castrol and signed a multi-year collaboration agreement afterward. The financial terms of this agreement were not disclosed.
The full MoreCircular program will launch on May 20 at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.
