Four-peat for FedEx, as Matthew Sloan takes top spot at 2025 TMCSuperTech
RALEIGH, North Carolina—Matthew Sloan has kept FedEx Freight on top at TMCSuperTech, earning the title of Grand Champion, the fourth consecutive winner from the logistics company. The national skills competition was held alongside American Trucking Associations' Technology and Maintenance Council’s Fall Meeting at the Raleigh Convention Center, the meeting’s second year here.
This was the 20th TMCSuperTech, and Sloan, a senior technician out of Jacksonville, Florida, has competed in more than half of these. He could not recall if it was 11 or 12, but that experience helped him finally grab the top spot.
“It takes a lot,” he said. “Reading what you need to read, and trying to keep up with the technology… Now, it took me a while to get to this place.”
Sloan rose above more than 90 other technicians over two days of competing and testing, taking on 28 stations ranging from tire and wheel to cybersecurity and EV safety.
Sloan placed first in three skills tracks: Electronic Engine Diagnostics, Electrical Circuits, and ADAS stations.
Even for the veteran tech, this skills competition, which is always changing with the technology, had some surprises in store.
“I haven't ever seen remote diagnostics, so that was a new one for me,” Sloan noted.
He explained all the new technology TMC tests for gives him a better sense of what to expect in the bay. “I take that back to the shop, and then I study it, read through the manuals, and figure out what's going to be happening, what we need to know as a technician to diagnose equipment correctly the first time,” Sloan explained.
Kelby Bentley, also with FedEx Freight and 2019 TMCSuperTech Grand Champion, placed second in the competition, and Carl Diehl of Hogan Truck Leasing placed third.
Grand prizes included monetary and equipment contributions from Noregon, Snap-on/NEXIQ, Blackhawk Industrial, Truck-Lite, and Frontier Truck Parts, along with a $500 gift card and inclusive trip for two to the 2025 Daytona 500 from TMC.
In the student side of the competition, TMCFutureTech, Tully McKinley and Madison Boone, both from Forsyth Technical Community College, took first and second place, respectively. WyoTech’s Bennett Fischer placed third.
