Question: Why do I have to clean wheel studs and hubs whenever I take off a tire?

Answer:

A commonly overlooked, but important task in the tire shop is to properly clean wheel hubs and studs when changing tires. The buildup of rust and debris in the stud threads and the mating surface of the hub and the wheel nut can cause incorrect clamping force, even if the proper torque has been reached. This can lead to wheel offs and the shop/tire technician is liable.

Using the traditional wire brush by hand is time-consuming and is physically exerting on the technician. Counteract’s Stud Cleaning Tools are a modern and efficient way to clean the threads of the studs more thoroughly and quickly than ever before. Its simple design is easy to use, and the tool can hook right onto your non-impact drill. The brush inserts are interchangeable and cheap to replace when their life is up. Brush inserts are available in a wide variety of sizes from 12mm to 39.6mm.

Counteract has also recently released the Hub Pro and the Hub Pro XL. These tools are effective at cleaning wheel hubs and fit a 1/2” drive impact. The Hub Cleaning Pads are thread on and easily replaceable. The Hub Pro is for automotive use with 16mm studs, while the Hub Pro XL is for commercial use with 22mm studs.
