Details of Mack Pioneer safety features

Mack Trucks has recently detailed the various safety features included in the Mack Pioneer vehicle, including its front and side curtain airbags, a digital mirror system, and a high-strength steel cab.

“The safety features in the Pioneer reflect our deep understanding of drivers’ needs and our commitment to their well-being,” said Stephen Roy, president, Mack Trucks. “With professional drivers spending an average of 150 hours per month in their trucks, we’ve engineered safety technologies that provide protection before, during and after any potential incident.”

The Mack Pioneer comes standard with driver and passenger frontal airbags and optional side curtain airbags, as well as seatbelt systems and a cab designed for collision protection. The cab is made from high-strength steel that has been tested against Swedish Impact (BOF 10) standards and UN EE R29 CAB Strength protocols, with Mack running additional frontal sled, trailer barrier, and 90-degree rollover tests.

“Our cab design prioritizes driver protection under all circumstances,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “We’ve subjected the Pioneer to extensive testing beyond what’s federally required, including specialized roof crush, A-pillar and rear-wall impact scenarios to ensure maximum occupant protection.”

Other structural changes for safety include the chassis design. Mack created splayed frame rails, which are meant to direct the energy from a crash away from the crash, from high-tensile steel for added strength and weight distribution. Also, the chassis is designed to encourage the engine to break away and drop below the cab for added safety.

Additionally, the Mack Pioneer includes the E-Call 911 emergency response system. This activates when airbags deploy or when the system detects a rollover and unlocks the vehicle doors, activates the interior lights, and contacts emergency services with the vehicle’s location.

“The splayed frame design is a crucial safety feature,” said Scott Sokach, safety product manager at Mack Trucks. “By directing the engine downward in a collision, we prevent it from intruding into the driver’s space, significantly reducing the risk of lower extremity injuries.”

Finally, in a first for Mack Trucks, the Mack Pioneer features a digital mirror system in lieu of traditional side mirrors. Instead, cameras mounted in pods are meant to eliminate blind spots while also increasing the Pioneer’s aerodynamics.

“The digital mirror system represents a major advancement in both safety and efficiency,” said Lukas Yates, expert chief designer at Mack Trucks. “It provides drivers with an expanded field of view, infrared night vision capability, clear visibility in rain and snow and trailer panning functionality with distance indicators. Beyond the safety benefits, the system improves fuel efficiency by approximately 1% through reduced drag.”
