Mack adds impact-resistant windshield technology to Granite
Mack Trucks is introducing its Mack ImpactShield windshield, using Corning Fusion5 Glass, as standard equipment on the all-new Granite vocational truck. The redesign marks a broader overhaul of the Granite platform, which also includes a galvanized steel cab, updated driver-assist systems, and an integrated electronic parking brake with rollaway protection.
The windshield itself features a one-piece, bonded curved design intended to improve structural integrity compared to conventional multi-layer or standard laminated glass systems used in heavy-duty applications.
“Mack customers don’t have time for unplanned stops, and neither do we,” said Tim Wrinkle, vice president, product owner, vocational and medium duty at Mack. “Partnering with Corning to bring Fusion5 Glass to heavy-duty trucking isn’t just about using better materials; it’s about finding every possible way to keep our customers’ trucks on the job and their costs under control.”
From a maintenance and fleet durability standpoint, Mack and Corning highlight the ImpactShield's several performance gains over standard Class 8 windshields:
- Twice the resistance to sharp impact damage
- Twice the resistance to thermal shock
- Up to five times better scratch resistance
- Resistance to environmental wear
- Weight reduction
- Better defrost performance
Together, these factors are intended to extend service life and reduce windshield replacement frequency, which is an area that can drive both direct parts costs and technician downtime.
Beyond the Granite, Mack plans to extend the availability of the ImpactShield system across additional models, including the Anthem and Pioneer, as well as the Keystone vocational platform. Customers will also have the option of a conventional curved Aero windshield depending on application needs and cost considerations.
Production of the updated Granite, including the ImpactShield system, is scheduled to begin in January 2027 at Mack’s Macungie, Pennsylvania manufacturing facility, with orders opening in the latter half of 2026.
