Enter the Fathom: Ford names new midsize electric truck

Ford has named its upcoming midsize electric pickup the Fathom, giving the automaker's first vehicle built on its Universal EV Platform an identity ahead of its planned 2027 launch.
The pickup starts at under $30,000, which includes the $28,350 MSRP plus a $1,595 destination and delivery fee, and will be targeted for municipal and small fleets.
The Fathom marks Ford's return to the electric pickup market following the company's decision to end production of the F-150 Lightning in December of last year. While the Lightning offered up to 320 miles of estimated range, Ford said its new midsize truck is designed around affordability, with a projected 250-mile range from its standard-range battery.
With embedded connectivity included standard, fleets will be able to access Ford Pro Intelligence telematics services without any additional hardware. The truck will also feature integrated Apple Maps, BlueCruise capability for hands-free highway driving, bidirectional power, and intelligent EV routing with battery preconditioning.
Designed with 20% fewer parts and 50% fewer cooling hoses and connections than a typical Ford vehicle program, according to the company, the simplified Fathom platform is intended to help lower costs while improving scalability.
Ford said the vehicle's commercial-focused features were informed by customer feedback and collaboration with upfitters during development, and additional details are expected closer to launch.
The name was selected after a nine-month evaluation process that considered hundreds of options, with focus groups settling on Fathom, a term that means to understand or comprehend, also referring to a nautical measurement of depth (1 fathom=6 feet).
Interior space is also deep, with the truck offering a five-passenger capacity that exceeds that of a Toyota RAV4.
Additional features include a large touchscreen, bidirectional power capability, digital key technology, a front trunk, and a cargo bed for added storage flexibility.
The Fathom will be available for preorder in early 2027.
