Clarios rolls out Battery Manager, partners with Ruan

At ATA MCE, Clarios discussed it Power Management System, which includes its IdleLess and Battery Manager solutions. The company also said it was partnering with Ruan Transportation Management Systems.

Ruan Transportation partners with Clarios

Clarios unveiled its Power Management System at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition, which includes its IdleLess solutions, as well as the new Battery Manager. Additionally, the company announced that Ruan Transportation Management Systems will be deploying Clarios’ IdleLess solution.

“The two insights we're talking about here today is, one, how to utilize the same technology to reduce fuel savings from idling, and two, using the same technology to produce a battery management [solution], improve battery health, and reduce jump starts in the vehicle,” said Junior Barrett, global director of Business Development at the conference.

IdleLess and Battery Manager

That first insight is from Clarios’ IdleLess solution, which debuted at ACT EXPO in April. According to Christina Yarnold, director of Product Management for Clarios, the system monitors the charge level of vehicle batteries and then sends alerts to drivers to let them know when to start and stop their engines.

“This allows them to have confidence that they've got enough power left, and they can turn off their engine,” Yarnold said.

Meanwhile, the Battery Manager solution provides a more holistic look into vehicle battery management. Designed from the same software used for IdleLess, Battery Manager uses the same IoT gateway as IdleLess to transfer information from the battery’s sensor to Clarios’ cloud. There, the company’s AI algorithms convert that data into battery-health insights.

“The algorithms we use are proprietary, [they offer] state of health and state of charge monitoring, and communication,” Barrett added.

These insights can then be shared with fleets via the web portal, APIs, or on driver tablets in the vehicle.

“With Battery Manager, we monitor the health and notify the fleets when that battery is approaching end of life,” Yarnold said. “So that allows [fleets] to plan ahead and know when that battery needs to be replaced.”

Additionally, included in Battery Manager is a feature called Charge System Health Monitoring, which allows Clarios to look at the low-voltage system within a vehicle to look for components that could be impacting the battery, Yarnold continued.

As an example, she described how an old or undersized alternator can have detrimental effects on a battery. But with Charge System Health Monitoring, Clarios can let fleets know about that alternator sooner rather than later. Plus, Yarnold emphasized how Battery Manager doesn’t just monitor battery packs, but individual batteries, extending the lifecycle of those left in the pack.

Rollout with Ruan

Finally, Clarios also announced that it was partnering with Ruan Transportation Management Systems, a Des Moines, Iowa-based fleet that is deploying IdleLess.

The company has over 3,500 power units and 9,500 trailers, and will be deploying IdleLess in phases, according to Clarios.
