For on-highway fleets hauling freight across long distances, neglecting tire pressure and tread condition is one of the most expensive and dangerous practices an operator can make. Proper inflation and timely monitoring of tread wear deliver measurable returns in fuel economy, tire life, and risk reduction.
Underinflation is the leading preventable cause of premature tire failure and blowouts. When a tire runs even 10 psi below its recommended cold pressure for the load being carried, the sidewalls flex excessively. This generates heat that degrades the internal structure, accelerates shoulder wear, and shortens tread life by 10% to 25% or more.
Industry data consistently shows that a constant 20% underinflation can cut tire life by roughly 30%. For a fleet running expensive steer, drive, and trailer tires—often $400 to $700 each—the cumulative cost adds up quickly. Irregular wear patterns—edge wear, center wear, cupping, or flat spotting—are diagnostic clues. They often point back to chronic under- or over-inflation, misalignment, imbalance, or suspension issues that should be corrected before the next set of tires is sacrificed.
Regular visual inspections and tread-depth measurements during pre-trip checks, coupled with accurate pressure readings, form the foundation of effective tire management. Drivers and technicians should look for cuts, bulges, embedded objects, and weather-related damage in addition to depth and pressure. Addressing small problems early prevents the cascade of higher fuel burn, shortened tire life, expensive roadside service calls, and the safety risks associated with a sudden blowout at highway speeds.
