What can you do?

Amy Kopin, senior compliance engineer with Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) and Detroit Diesel, offered a few tips to keeping a fleet compliant with the greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption standards.

DTNA is the leading heavy duty truck manufacturer in North America (www.daimler-trucksnorthamerica.com).  A part of DTNA, Detroit Diesel offers a complete line of heavy duty diesel engines, axles, transmissions, safety systems and telematics products (www.demanddetroit.com).

Here are a few ways to keep your fleet compliant and reduce its carbon footprint:

-Train technicians to regularly maintain all vehicles. A vehicle that follows a regulated maintenance schedule is more fuel efficient and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

- Train drivers. Drivers who are easy on the brakes and fuel pedals, avoid hard accelerations and reduce idle time, which contributes to less fuel consumption.

- Keep tires properly inflated. Under-inflation increases tire wear, reduces fuel economy and leads to higher greenhouse gas and other air pollutant emissions.

 - Add aerodynamic technologies to trailers. To view a list of aerodynamic trailer accessories, visit: www.VehicleServicePros.com/directory/fuel-efficiency-and-idle-reduction-devices/aerodynamic-devices-and-systems

- If looking to purchase a new light duty vehicle, use the EPA’s SmartWay Green Vehicle Guide (www.epa.gov/greenvehicles) to help find an environmentally-friendly vehicle.
