Thankfully, the state I reside in – Maryland – didn’t make the list of the top 10 states with the worst DUI problems, recently released by BackgroundChecks.org. It’s an organization devoted to public safety, online privacy, home security and open government.

The top 10 states in America with the worst DUI problems are, in order:

  • Wyoming
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
  • Montana
  • South Carolina
  • Mississippi
  • New Mexico
  • Kentucky
  • Maine
  • Arkansas

To determine state DUI rankings, BackgroundChecks.org used a combination of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Transportation and local state data to create a comprehensive score for each state.

Least

The 10 states with the fewest DUI problems, in order, are:

  • New York
  • Massachusetts
  • Illinois
  • New Jersey
  • Utah
  • Rhode Island
  • Virginia
  • Indiana
  • Washington
  • Kansas

Sadly, more than 10,000 people a year die from DUI related accidents.

Where did your state rank?
