On Sept. 27, 2016, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) held a webinar on periodic motor vehicle safety inspection (PMVI) programs and new safety technologies. During the webinar, participants heard from:

  • Doug Campbell, president, Automotive Safety Council, an organization in automotive public safety education and standards development;
  • Representative Madeleine Dean (PA-153), sponsor of PA House Bill 2297, a bill to tie recall notifications to safety inspections;
  • Taylor Hill, independent shop manager, vehicle inspection specialist.

Following the presentations, participants had the opportunity to engage in a question-and- answer session with panelists. Below are a few of the topics that were addressed:

  • Safety technologies are constantly changing and updating. It’s vital for shops to stay on top of training so their technicians are fully equipped to repair today’s vehicles.
  • Neglected recall repairs pose a threat to driver safety. One common sense solution is to require recall checks during safety inspections. Many shops already offer this service as a courtesy to their customers.
  •  Shops in states without safety programs should continue to educate consumers and policymakers about the importance of preventative maintenance.

ASA plans to continue the conversation on state vehicle inspections at its third annual Vehicle Safety Inspection and Maintenance Forum in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 19. To sign-up for the forum, please click here.
