WEX launches AI-powered SecureFuel to combat fleet fuel fraud

PORTLAND, Maine—WEX is expanding its use of artificial intelligence to combat fleet fuel fraud, the company announced at its third North American Mobility Summit. The solution, SecureFuel, will be available to eligible customers as a new fraud prevention capability that combines fleet card transaction data with real-time vehicle information to stop unauthorized fuel purchases before they're approved.

Scheduled to begin rolling out on August 3, SecureFuel uses WEX fleet card transaction data in combination with telematics and AI-powered fraud models to identify suspicious transactions in real time. The company said this is designed to reduce fraudulent fuel purchases while minimizing false card declines and manual investigations.

Unlike traditional fleet card controls that rely primarily on spending limits and purchase rules, SecureFuel incorporates things like vehicle location and transaction data to verify purchases before they go through. WEX said its proprietary payment network, which covers approximately 95% of U.S. fuel stations, provides detailed purchase data to the AI model that strengthens the platform's fraud detection capabilities.

“It is not about just declining a transaction,” explained Cecile Zinder, VP mobility products at WEX, during the announcement. “It's about giving you the flexibility so that you can set the controls, so that you can feel comfortable about what's happening in the field.”

Customers can activate SecureFuel through the WEXOnline platform using telematics provided by WEX or supported third-party providers, which currently include Geotab and Samsara. The company shared future plans to integrate with Motive and Azuga by the end of Q3 2026 and with Verizon Connect and Powerfleet by the end of the year. Fleets without an existing telematics provider can obtain a supported solution through WEX.

Actionable Insights

WEX also previewed Actionable Insights, an AI-powered analytics feature currently in beta testing. Embedded within WEXOnline, the tool analyzes transaction, fleet, payment, and telematics data to identify driver misuse, flag unusual transactions, uncover fuel-saving opportunities, and surface recommended actions for fleet managers. 

“You can think of Actionable Insights as really the other side of the coin to SecureFuel,” said Daniel VanderMeer, principal data scientist at WEX. “SecureFuel is working at the pump; it's working in real time. What AI Insights does is allow you to get rich insights for solving these issues of driver misuse,” while also looking for savings opportunities.

Also part of Actionable Insights, WEX said telematics data can also verify whether a vehicle's fuel level actually increased after a purchase, helping identify cases where a card may have been used to fuel another vehicle or detect potential card swaps. 

The announcements reflect WEX's continued expansion beyond traditional fleet payment services toward a broader offering of AI-driven fleet management tools.
