PORTLAND, Maine—WEX is expanding its offering in fleet technology, announcing at its third Venture Capital Summit that eligible fleet customers can now access connected vehicle capabilities through Standard Fleet's software platform without installing traditional aftermarket telematics hardware.
This collaboration will allow fleets with any of the 30 supported vehicle brands to activate services such as vehicle tracking, digital keys, and remote vehicle access by connecting directly to built-in connectivity systems. According to WEX, the platform can be activated without installation appointments or vehicle downtime.
The launch is one of the first commercial products to emerge from WEX Venture Capital's investment portfolio. WEX participated in Standard Fleet's Series A funding round in 2025 and said the rollout demonstrates its strategy of identifying emerging technologies and bringing them directly to customers.
"Our goal isn't just to invest in promising startups. It's also to bring their innovations to WEX customers across the physical economy. Standard Fleet is an example of that strategy in action,” said David Klein, head of WEX Venture Capital.
For maintenance operations, the announcement is representative of a broader industry shift toward software-centric fleet management. Instead of relying solely on aftermarket telematics devices, newer vehicles equipped with factory connectivity can increasingly transmit vehicle data directly through OEM systems. That approach can potentially reduce installation costs and eliminate the vehicle downtime associated with hardware deployment.
“Making Standard Fleet available through WEX gives customers a faster, simpler way to connect supported vehicles and begin using features like vehicle data and remote access," said Carlos Carriedo, chief operating officer, Americas payments and mobility at WEX.
David Hodge, CEO of Standard Fleet, said one of the biggest advantages of the platform over traditional aftermarket telematics is its ability to pull diagnostic trouble codes directly from automakers through over-the-air connections. This allows fleets to move beyond time-based maintenance check-ins toward more proactive maintenance.
"Not only can you have predictive or proactive maintenance, you can also have much better reactive maintenance," Hodge said. "The fleet manager will get that information without requiring someone in the field to notice and care."
Hodge said the platform can also improve shop efficiency by reducing unnecessary vehicle inspections. Fleet managers can receive alerts through communication tools such as Slack when issues occur, including engine faults or collision events, allowing technicians to spend less time checking healthy vehicles and more time responding to actual maintenance needs.
For fleets already using WEX, the integration is designed to simplify adoption. Hodge said customers can purchase Standard Fleet through their existing WEX relationship, streamlining procurement and simplifying adoption.
The companies have also begun integrating their platforms. One example is the ability for Standard Fleet to ingest WEX fuel card transaction data, allowing fleet managers to view fuel purchases alongside vehicle information within Standard Fleet.
The announcement is also a sign of WEX's continued expansion beyond its traditional fuel card business. WEX Venture Capital has invested in more than 15 companies and funds focused on fleet operations, mobility, and more since launching in 2023.
