All lubricants contain additives that inhibit breakdown. As these additives become depleted, the fluid degrades and is no longer able to perform its intended function. The amount of wear metals in the fluid is the biggest contributor to the fluid needing to be changed. These kits are a tool that provide a measure of additive depletion to the level of sludge and/or the wear metals in the fluid.
